De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde is a holistic institution that practices creativity, inclusivity, and innovation. The institution is an open space for its students to express themselves freely and do things extraordinarily well. Guided by the Lasallian values of faith, zeal for service, and communion, and mission, their students work towards becoming well-rounded individuals who are socially aware and responsible, engaged, and responsive to the needs of others.

For the students to fully practice being active contributors to nation-building and work towards the common good, The Student Trainers of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde under the Center for Student Life-Student Involvement Unit (CSL-SIU) organized the event #WeCan. This event is an advocacy week that serves as a platform to raise awareness on societal issues that are timely and relevant by recognizing current issues faced by our people and having the urgency to address them.

For this year, #WeCan 2021: “Pagpupugay sa Katayuan ng Kababaihan sa Lipunan” is a week-long event consisting of 3 major events that will take place on May 27 and 28 through online platforms: Zoom Meet Rooms and Facebook Livestream via the Student Trainers Official Page. The theme for this year’s #WeCan is “Unheard but not Silenced: The Role of Women in Society Building,” with a purpose of creating a Benildean community that upholds the rights of Filipino women by shedding light on the role and importance of women who are underrepresented in different fields, at the same time promotes gender equality and women empowerment. In line with this, we have invited a few beneficiaries who serve the same purpose and have the same view of promoting women empowerment.

The platforms will showcase “Paralaya: Abante Babae” which is an E-Magazine with the theme of “The Struggles and Triumphs of Women,” submitted by various artists of both the Benildean Community as well as Non-Benildeans for #WeCanEnlighten: Lathala Para Sa Lakambini. In addition, a roundtable discussion with different speakers who will share their insights and experiences on the roles of Filipino women for #WeCanEngage: Hangarin ng Binibini, and lastly, performances set for various students and artists who love to perform and express themselves through the form of a shadow play, song, dance, and spoken word poetry for #WeCanEmpower: Pamanang Peminista.

This two-day event motivates and urges the Benildean Community to gain their knowledge towards the matter of Filipino women. This also paves the way for the Benildean Community to share their insights for certain issues circling gender inequality. With this, students could be more self-assertive to empower people and to be socially responsible.

Be part of this year’s #WeCan as we empower women and give them the recognition they deserve! This is the time for us to raise the flag as we fight for one cause and uplift each other.
